SV6: Problem with large number of units

When playing with many units the player cannot act anymore because the interaction with units is stopped because of animation:

If I produce a large number of units (E12W3 warship) to flood an enemy with the help of director units the game sooner or later slows down; not as much as in SV5 however it slows down. The rate of calculating movement seems still to be the same as 1 impulse per second, however graphics rendering happens only every 3 or 5 impulses.

The problem is not rendering or speed but that I cannot act anymore. The player should still be able to move his mouse and to give commands.

Suggestion: If large number of the same unit type is order to the same destination it might be an idea that the movement vector is not displayed for each of them but as a combined vector. This way the number of lines could be reduced.

Another concept to reduce the number of icons and lines was a group concept that I have suggested some years ago: Groups might easily created by simply adding one unit to another ship; it will automatically inherit it's orders.

Re: SV6: Problem with large number of units

Oh yes, This is the very thing that bugs me the most in the newer versions of SV. When I has a small number of units, everything runs fine until I get big enough to do some serious damage. I can still remember what it was really like to order units really fast even when the games got really big.

But when I have a TM of say like 10 and I have 20 good stars, I build starships like crazy and it takes me 3-5 impulses just to order one group of starships (that includes targeting and moving). Directors help a bunch in that situation, but there are many times where I don't want the warships to plow into the nearest star.

I also wanted to have an option to remove those order lines and (even scanner ranges) since I don't use them all the time, and they can slow down the refresh rate when I need to order starships.
